MALLARDS' JONES NAMED IHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK

02/08/2010 1:24 PM

The Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, today announced that the Mallards’ Kyle Jones has been named IHL Goaltender of the Week for the period ending yesterday. Jones is the second Mallard goaltender in as many weeks to be so honored- Jerad Kaufmann earned the award last week.

Jones, 27, made a personal single game season high 38 saves while backstopping the host Mallards to a 3-1 win over the Fort Wayne Komets last Saturday night. The win came in Jones’s first appearance in the Mallards’ net since January 24 and extended Quad City’s regulation unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-0-1). Jones Saturday night was at his busiest late, stopping 16 shots in the third period alone. The North Delta, British Columbia, native helped the Mallards to what was their first regulation win in nine games against Fort Wayne this season and the Flock’s second win of any stripe over the Komets this year.

Jones this season has gone 8-10-1-1 in 23 games while posting a 3.40 goals against average and a .890 save percentage.

Jones came to the Mallards for his second professional campaign after going 9-16-2 with a 3.20 goals against average and a .903 save percentage in 32 games with the ECHL’s Phoenix Roadrunners last season. Jones started 2008-09 with the AHL’s Worcester Sharks, for whom he went 1-1-0 in three games while posting a 5.20 goals against average and a .756 save percentage.

Jones spent four remarkable seasons at St. Norbert College in Du Pere, Wisconsin, before breaking into the pro ranks. A three-time All-American, Jones won the 2007-08 Sid Watson Award as the nation’s best Division III player. The award capped off a stellar senior campaign that saw Jones backstop the Green Knights to the national title while suffering just a single loss all season. The 6’ 0”, 200-pound netminder went 21-1-3 in 25 games while turning in a microscopic 1.09 goals against average, a sterling .950 save percentage and ten shutouts. Over the course of his college career, Jones went 87-10-8 with a 1.69 goals against average, a .926 save percentage and 25 shutouts. He set NCAA Division III career records for both wins and shutouts while helping St. Norbert to four straight Northern Collegiate Hockey Association titles.

The Mallards are back in action at home Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Dayton Gems. 12-ounce drafts will be available for just $2 at i wireless Center concession stands during Wednesday night’s game.

Tickets for Wednesday night’s game and all remaining regular season Mallards home games are available at the i wireless Center box office, Ticketmaster outlets and www.ticketmaster.com or through Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free at 1-800-745-3000. The box office is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on game days from 10:00 a.m. through the end of the second period.

Oh my god, what has the world come to?

Here's an idea...

he got goalie of the week based on 1 game? that seems pretty weak. he was pretty good the other night, but there was no one else in the league that was able to put up more than 1 good game?

plus, had no idea he went to st. norbert. they play against monmouth college and a lot of the small schools in central illinois in most sports. didn't even know they had hockey!

Thats how good my players are, they earn goalie of the week with only 1 game played. A requirement for me is they must be capable of earning player/goalie of the week by playing only one game. Thats part of my process of recruitment.
